“TOKYO Sewerage Infrastructure Tour” held

The Sewerage Bureau is working to provide easy-to-understand information about the rarely seen mechanisms and roles of sewerage systems, as well as the policies the Bureau is promoting. This autumn, during the tourist season, we will be holding a “Tokyo Sewerage Infrastructure Tour,” which will take you around sewerage facilities in the wards and Tama area. We look forward to your participation.

2. Overview of facilities
Ward course
1) Wada-Yayoi Main Line (Wada Pump Facility) (Suginami Ward)
This facility temporarily stores rainwater that falls in Nakano and Suginami wards during heavy rains, helping to reduce flood damage. Storage capacity: 150,000 cubic meters (including the collection pipes connected to the main line).

2) Mikawashima Water Reclamation Center (Arakawa Ward)
This is the oldest water reclamation center in Tokyo, which began operation in 1922. It treats sewage generated in Arakawa Ward, Taito Ward, and other areas. Treatment capacity: 665,000 cubic meters per day

3) Shibaura Water Reclamation Center (Minato Ward)
This is the third oldest water reclamation center in Tokyo, which began operation in 1931. It treats sewage generated in Chiyoda Ward, Chuo Ward, and other areas. Treatment capacity: 830,000 cubic meters per day

4) Nonagawa River Reinforcement Main Line Construction (Meguro Ward)
This project involves building a main line to temporarily store rainwater in parts of Meguro Ward and Setagaya Ward in order to reduce flooding damage.

Tama course
1) Kodaira City Sewerage Museum (Kodaira City)
This facility in Kodaira City introduces the role, mechanism and history of sewers, and also allows visitors to experience real sewer pipes 25 meters underground.

2) Tama River Upstream Water Reclamation Center (Akishima City)
This water reclamation center, which began operation in 1978, treats sewage generated in Ome City, Akishima City, Fussa City, Hamura City, Mizuho Town, and other areas. Treatment capacity: 264,700 cubic meters per day

20 people per session (If there are many applications, participants will be selected by lottery.)

7. How to apply
Please apply using the application form on the TOKYO Sewerage Infrastructure Tour Office website (link to external site).

8. Others
- The program may change in the event of rain. The tour will be canceled in the event of severe weather.
- You will be moving around the tour facility on foot, and some parts will involve stairs and long walking distances, so please wear comfortable clothing and shoes that are easy to move in.
- There will also be construction sites, so please wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty.
