TOKYO Resilience Project ~ Aiming for “Safety for the Next 100 Years” ~

The safe and secure city which could be called the fruit of our predecessors’ efforts will be taken to higher level and passed on to future generations.

Measures to make Tokyo more resilient

Increasingly severe floods and storms, major earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions could strike at any time.
This far-sighted project enhances measures to protect the lives and livelihoods of Tokyo residents and helps maintain the functions and economic activities of Tokyo, the capital city of Japan.

Floods and Storms

Increase in the amount of rainfall, rise in the sea level, and more frequent and severe floods and storms will be triggered by climate change.

Recovery from the Great Kanto Earthquake

The year 2023 marks the centennial of the Great Kanto Earthquake.

On September 1, 1923, a major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 hit the Kanto area. After the earthquake, reconstruction plan created by Shimpei Goto (former Mayor of Tokyo), the President of the Imperial Capital Reconstruction Department, was used to carry out land readjustment projects and recovery projects for streets, bridges, rivers, canals, and parks, centering on areas destroyed by fire. The social capital was reconstructed, leading to the formation of the modern day Tokyo.

We will use this resilient spirit that we have inherited from our predecessors to further improve the safe and secure city that has been built so it can withstand increasingly severe floods and storms, major earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions that may hit at any time. We will take our city to higher levels and pass it on to future generations.
