New target set for introduction of fuel cell commercial vehicles in Tokyo

Power and Communications

As part of its efforts to ensure a stable supply of energy and decarbonize the city, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is aiming to expand demand for hydrogen energy and quickly implement it in society.
In particular, the use of hydrogen in commercial vehicles with long driving distances is extremely important for decarbonizing the transportation sector and expanding the use of hydrogen.
In addition to the fiscal 2030 introduction targets for fuel cell commercial vehicles set out in the Tokyo 2050 Strategy, we have now established new introduction targets for each vehicle type and interim targets (for fiscal 2028). Please see below for more information.

1 Target for the introduction of fuel cell commercial vehicles

Fiscal Year 2028

Approximately 2,900 units

Fiscal Year 2030

Approximately 5,000 units

Fiscal Year 2035

Approximately 10,000 units

2 Targets for introduction by vehicle type (until FY2030)

Commercial vehicle Fiscal Year 2028 Fiscal Year 2030

3 Application for priority areas under the Hydrogen Society Promotion Act

Based on the perspective of high demand and ambitious activities by local governments, as outlined in the basic policy of the Hydrogen Society Promotion Act, the government has applied to be designated as a “priority region for the intensive introduction of fuel cell commercial vehicles.” Going forward, we will continue to take the lead in promoting the introduction of fuel cell commercial vehicles and the development of hydrogen stations in line with demand, thereby establishing a model for their widespread use.

4 Tokyo Metropolitan Government Support System (Reference)

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is providing support for the introduction costs, fuel costs, etc. of each commercial vehicle in order to promote their widespread use. As soon as the details are decided, they will be announced on the website of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Global Warming Prevention Activities Promotion Center (nicknamed Cool Net Tokyo), a public interest incorporated foundation run by the Tokyo Metropolitan Environmental Public Corporation.

This project is an initiative to promote the“Tokyo 2050 Strategy.”
