Waterways That Connect, Smiles That Spread: Tokyo’s Rivers

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government organizes various events related to river conservation to help residents develop a sense of familiarity and affection for Tokyo’s rivers. In November of Reiwa 8, we will hold a “Facility Tour,” during which staff will provide on-site explanations about the facility’s role and operations. We hope you will join us. (Free admission)

Tour of the Floodgate Management Center, Which Protects the Low-Lying Areas (Kiyosumi, Koto Ward)

The “Sluice Gate Management Center Control Room,” which remotely monitors and controls 20 facilities, including sluice gates and drainage pumping stations, and the “Kiyosumi Drainage Pumping Station”—a disaster prevention facility that, following the closure of floodgates due to a typhoon or storm surge,tsunamis, and then, following the closure of the floodgates, discharges water from inland rivers—which has risen due to heavy rain—into the Sumida River, serving as a disaster prevention facility that protects the area from flooding.

Important Notes
- Please meet us at the location. Please use public transportation to get to the tour venue.
- There will be some stairs to climb and descend. Please note that there is no elevator at the Kiyosumi Pumping Station. Please wear comfortable clothing and non-slip shoes.
- We expect that the number of applicants will exceed the number of available spots, so a lottery will likely be held. Please refrain from canceling on the day of the event.
- Please note that events may be canceled or modified due to weather conditions. We appreciate your understanding.
- We will notify you of the lottery results regardless of whether you were selected or not. In the unlikely event that you have not received notification by 10 days prior to the event date, please contact the Planning Section of the Rivers Division, Bureau of Construction, at 03-5320-5425.
