The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is promoting the removal of overhead power lines with the goals of “strengthening urban disaster prevention capabilities,” “ensuring safe and comfortable pedestrian spaces,” and “creating an attractive urban landscape.
”To help Tokyo residents experience the benefits of removing overhead power lines firsthand, in addition to themes such as “Scenes that would be ‘even better’ without utility poles” and “Scenes that are ‘so much better’ now that the poles are gone,” we are launching a new theme this year:“Scenes of ‘islands’ where we want to remove utility poles or are glad we did,” and will begin accepting entries for this year’s photo contest starting Friday, July 3.

Photo Contest

1. Theme

We are accepting submissions of photos taken on streets in Tokyo that focus on utility poles and power lines, organized into three themes.

Theme 1

A Landscape That Would Be “Even Better” Without Power Poles

Theme 2

The scenery is “so much better” now that the power lines are underground

Theme 3

Scenes from “Islands” Where People Wanted to Remove Power Lines—and Are Glad They Did (NEW)

6. Awards

On the afternoon of Tuesday, November 10, Reiwa 8, the “Announcement of Winning Entries for the 6th ‘No-Pole Day’ Photo Contest” will be held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, where awards will be presented to the winners.
This event will be livestreamed on the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s official video channel, “Tokyo Video.”
